Cuticle Pushers are a sure way to push back cuticles and pterygium instead of removing it. Best to use is a metal cuticle pusher or orange sticks.

Hold the cuticle pusher at a 45-degree angle to the nail, gently push cuticles back by either using the flat or round spoon side of the cuticle pusher.
